They say it’s better to be overdressed than underdressed, but what about smart casual? It’s one of the trickiest dress codes to decipher. BLAZER

Always start with a blazer. We have long championed the teaming of a smart blazer with a shirt and sweater. It signals formality but the contrasting texture of the knit adds a more relaxed stance. For a less structured look, why not swap out the shirt for a crew neck T-shirt. Adding a sports jacket will lend some formality to this understated duo. Choose a linen blazer for summer, it’s practical and presentable.

SHIRT

A shirt is always a good idea, whether it’s crisp cotton or laidback linen. Combined with a pair of slim fit trousers and a jacket, a shirt is the ultimate smart casual symbol. Throw a knit on top and leave the tie behind to loosen things up a little. Check shirts and Oxford shirts are classic styles that work all year round, worn alone or layered up. KNITWEAR

Knitwear is both elegant and transforming. A lightweight merino wool sweater has a smart, snug fit that looks just as sharp with a jacket as it does on its own. PANTS
